The estimated total WWI casualties that include civilian and military deaths have increased since the end of the Great War. The infographics depict total casualties by nation and percent of the population of each nation that perished in the war. The United Kingdom had an estimated 994,138 casualties compared to the United States at 117,465. These numbers represent an estimated 2,19% of the UK population compared to 0.13 U.S. The nations experienced very different wars that have shaped how they remember the conflict and commemorate and memorialize fallen soldiers.
Virtually every nation on earth has a form of a monument, memorial, or museum dedicated to the Great War to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and remember the conflict. There are tens of thousands of memorials to the conflict. The first activity compares how the United States and the United Kingdom have created museums to the Great War. This website began as a comparative analysis of the US and the UK but includes additional options within the geolocation map which I hope will lead to a deeper analysis on how nations choose to remember the Great War. Various nations have included the memorialization of World War II soldiers into the existing monuments to the Great War. Nevertheless, nations have devised different means and methodologies to commemorate those who served in the Great War that reflects their war experiences and have contributed to their collective historical memory.
